The instructions are good and relatively easy to follow but they aren't at detailed as they describe. I used clamps for most things rather that masking tape. The shingle staining method is way to time consuming. Buy a small can of stain and a cheap quart plastic container with a good lid. Dump the shingles and the stain into the container and shake it gently for a few minutes. Pour through an old screen, cover with an old towel, flip over and let dry. Doing small numbers at a time is not a good use of time. The wood is very soft and takes several coats of paint. Lumber yards have sample sizes of paint for $2.00 or less with multiple color options. If you have the space outside I would recommend spray painting. I spray painted the window frames, doors, foundation and shutters. Went really well. If you like projects it is very fun to put together.
