a good kit
This is a pretty good kit, worth it if the subject interests you. There are five rockets depicted in this kit, each in 1/200 scale. The Mercury and Gemini kits are small, with my wife and son joking they looked like pens! The Saturn V is around 20" tall in this scale, and when all 5 are displayed shows how far we came in eight years during the Space Race!
The decal sheet is high quality, and comprehensive. I would have liked to had all the black first motion areas of the Saturn kits included, and made my own decal sheet of those. The black markings on the Saturn I first stage are included on the kit's decal sheet, as are the upper Mercury-Redstone and all of the Gemini first motion markings. All the USA etc. lettering and numerous flags are also included.
This kit also comes with a large cardboard display base with background, which is a very cool thing!
As with most AMT kits, the plastic detail is not exceptional. It is also a reissue of an 1960s vintage kit, if I am not mistaken. Part fit is good, and assembly is easy.
One big problem with the kit I got was that the adapter for the Mercury-Atlas capsule was a non-fill, perhaps with part of a previous sprue's piece wedged into the mold. I don't know if this has been fixed in subsequent runs, perhaps even within minutes of when my kit was molded. The deformed part was easily repaired with some Squadron/Signal White Putty.
I would also have liked an option to build one of the two lunar landers included with this kit with its legs deployed. They are depicted in thier stowed position, so they fit inside the Saturn models. As the lunar lander did not fly in the Saturn I, I chose to modify that one to display next to the rockets. Used gold gilding foil to cover the descent stage for a more realistic look on both landers.
Mostly because of the deformed part I gave this kit 3 stars, but would recommend it because of the unique subject, cardboard display stand, and nice decal sheet.
